Abbott Champions for Kids

Abbott Champions for KidsOne thing I love about being a blogger is that I can help shed light on important issues.  I can bring readers information about issues affecting their communities and ways they can help.  And, while I appreciate the desire to help wherever help is needed, I’m particularly interested in assisting those within our own communities.

Many of us are unaware of the number of children without adequate food in the US.  Did you know that over 16 million children in the US are food insecure, meaning they are unable to consistently rely on a nutritious food source.

I’ll admit, until fairly recently I had no idea how prevalent an issue this is.  After the horrible tornadoes that came through here in April, we donated to our community food bank and saw information about the Weekenders Backpack Program.  The participating schools are given backpacks of food {filled with enough food for two breakfasts, two lunches, and three snacks} to hand out to children in need on Fridays.

While programs like this exist in other areas as well, it’s still not enough.  That’s where programs like the Champions for Kids SIMPLE Service Project:  Abbott Nutrition Pack A Snack come in handy.

Abbott Nutrition Pack A Snack Program

This is such an easy and inexpensive way to help; anyone really can do it!

  • Educate yourself.  Learn what needs are in your area.  You can do this in a variety of ways, either inviting someone to speak to a group {food bank worker, social worker, shelter worker, etc.} or you can go visit their location.

  • Get together with the folks you know and gather nutritious food items {Pediasure®, Pediasure Sidekicks®, ZonePerfect® bars, etc.}.

  • Take your gathered items and deliver them to shelters, food banks, schools, etc.

Other Tips

This is a great way to teach your children about community service.  It is important for them to know that everyone is not as fortunate as they are, and if they are in a position to help, it’s a great idea to do so!

Make it a regular thing.  Write it in a calendar, set a Google calendar reminder, whatever you have to do.  Ensure that you are helping regularly.  Once is great, but more is better!

Think outside the box.  See how many others you can get involved.  What creative ways can you find to gather items?

I’d love to hear about your experiences with the campaign!!

Next week you’ll find out what we’ve put together and who will receive our packs!

Another Blissdom Ticket Giveaway!

I’ve gotten wind of another Blissdom ticket giveaway going on!!

Go visit Heather at Inexpensively to have a shot at winning a Blissdom ticket!!

Blissdom Goals

I'm Going to Blissdom!I’m still crazy excited about going to Blissdom, and still can’t quite believe it!  I can’t stinking wait!  It’s going to be so much fun, I’m going to learn a ton, and hopefully I’ll meet some great folks.  I’m also excited about doing something for myself!

That said, I’m still super nervous.  I know everyone says not to be, but I think it’s only natural to be even a tiny bit nervous.  I don’t want that to overshadow my experience, though, so I decided to come up with a few Blissdom goals:

  • Meet at least five new people.  I want to approach five completely random strangers.  Well, ones that are there for Blissdom as well…  Not just random folks in the hotel.
  • Meet at least two bloggers from blogs I follow.  I know for a fact that at least two blogs I follow will be represented.
  • Meet Alli Worthington.  She is, after all, one of the creators of Blissdom.  And I’ve heard you just have to meet her because she’s so stinking fabulous.
  • Meet at least two bloggers that I’ve been conversing with prior to the conference.  I have a spreadsheet, but not in a crazy stalker kind of way…
  • Actively participate in the Newbies event.  You know, actually go and talk and interact, instead of standing there thinking, “When is this over so I can go throw up…”
  • Take time to review the various tracks and choose ones that will benefit both me as a person, as well as Sweet Phenomena.  Blissdom is about finding your bliss.  Not just in blogging.

That’s it for now.  As things get closer and I learn more, I’m sure I’ll add goals to this list.  I want to take full advantage of the conference, and someone suggested coming with goals in mind was a great way to do this.  I love that idea.

Will you be heading to Blissdom?  I’d love to meet you.

Oh, and I heard tell that there’s another Blissdom ticket giveaway coming this week…  They’re sold out, so I would jump on it!’s been a lot of talk recently among bloggers about moving to self-hosted WordPress. I know quite a few bloggers that have “lost” their blogs this week on Blogger.  So not cool.

This has caused many to bite the bullet and make the switch.  For what it’s worth, it’s really not as scary and expensive as everyone thinks it is.  And, for what it’s worth, you really, really, really should make the switch sooner rather than later {it’s easier to make sure everything transferred over/is linking correctly, you can work on getting that Alexa rank down, you won’t lose all your hard work, so many reasons!}.

Twenty70 Hosting

I just recently learned about this company, and I have to say, I wish I had known about it before.  Here are a few of the great things about Twenty70:

  • It’s woman owned -  I’m all about supporting the ladies.
  • It specializes in WordPress hosting with servers optimized for WordPress – Specialization like this rocks.
  • They own their own servers - Yeah, again, this rocks.
  • They’ve provided partial and full conference sponsorships over the past two years - I love that they support bloggers!

Kelly really works to create a bond between herself and her clients, which is way more than you can expect from other hosting companies.  And want to know what’s really awesome about Twenty70 hosting right now?

They’re offering the hosting package, which gets you:

  • $5/month WordPress hosting
  • Free domain name for life
  • Transfer assistance
  • cPanel control panel {love cPanel!}

That’s it:  $5/month.  No contract.  No “pay for five years at $5/month”.  Just $5.  Per month.  You can do monthly or yearly billing.  Again, this is awesome!

I know a couple of bloggers that use Twenty70 hosting and love it.  I’m in the process of talking with Kelly about hosting for my stuff right now!

Let me know if you decide to go with Kelly, and if you have any questions!

True Confessions:  OK, I must confess:  I did write the post for a chance to win $100 spending cash at BlissDom.  I have not personally used Kelly’s service, but really do know bloggers who sing her praises to anyone who listens.  I am also really talking with her to see what I can work out for my stuff, because I really like the way she deals with customers and the great service she offers!
